Looking forward to a deep dive on questions of culture

Tansi Nîtôtemtik,

Rounding out our first week back in 2022, here’s a look at what will be coming up in March.

Norval Morrisseau, The Masterpiece

Our final theme for the term is culture. The importance of respecting and revitalizing Indigenous cultures, as well as the need for education on and implementation of culturally appropriate services, are woven throughout the TRC Calls to Action. Ultimately, culture is the lens through which progress of the implementation of the Calls to Action will be measured; culture frames the work to be done.

Culture has been a recurring subject this year on the blog. We’ve looked at the celebration of holidays; the role sport can play in keeping culture alive; the connection between language and culture and the way education can reinforce or undermine cultural connections.

There’s still plenty more to talk about and we have some ideas percolating, but we would love nothing more than to hear from you about what you’d like to see on the blog. That’s why we’re previewing this term’s monthly themes, so that we have the time and opportunity to talk with you more about what you’d like to read in the upcoming weeks.

Do you have a story to share? Do you have a question that you’d like to learn more about? Is there a conversation you’ve been hoping to have? Do you have an idea you’d like to bounce off others?

The beauty of this blog is its openness. It’s a supportive and safe community for Indigenous peoples and their allies to learn from one another and grow together. We love being part of this community and sharing this space with you. As we walk towards the end of our time writing for you, dear readers, we hope to make these weeks what you would like them to be.

Here are some of the topics we’re looking at for the month of March:

  • Indigenous identity – definitions, tests, implications of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, the pandemic of pretendians

  • Community and group membership – who decides and what are the consequences

  • The role of rights and law in defining culture vs. culture as ‘just’ food and dance

  • Understanding the cultural challenges of participating in colonial legal systems – how are cultural norms misunderstood in courts?

  • Pandemic impacts on cultural and cultural adaptation – virtual tobacco gifting and pow wows in the age of social distancing

With that in mind – is there anything else you’d like us to add to the list? The sky’s the limit (well, the sky and a non-existent budget). Hit us up in the comments below, on our social media channels, or fire us an email at reconciliactionyeg@gmail.com. We can’t wait to hear from you!

Until next time,

Team ReconciliACTION YEG
